Devotional

"Praise the Lord! How good it is to sing praises to our God." Ps 147:1

I heard marvelous praise in a very unlikely spot, but praise made perfect by the witness of a special congregation.

Just a few years prior to my visit to this small, hilly island, it had been at the center of an international crisis, subjected to shelling from land a short distance away. The big guns were still there, occasionally sending a shell into the sea to let everyone know of their presence. And here was this tiny congregation, existing at the very center of idol worship up and down the east coast of Asia. The center for large pilgrimages.

Yet, here was a group that met to worship our Lord Jesus. They had never had a pastor or trained leader. Their song was in a dialect I did not understand and it was not musically accomplished, but it was praise of God, perfect praise.

How had this congregation started and grown? Missionaries had been sent to a city not too far away. One girl went as a maid, working for a family that heard the word from missionaries. When she came home to be married, she had heard the word and experienced Christ's love in her employers. So, she spoke the word to family and friends in that place. That seed fell on a little patch of good soil in the midst of the thorny and rocky soil. And it bore fruit. In the midst of the turmoil they experienced, they had the peace of Christ and so they sang their perfect praise.

What missionary would have known that such a result would come from their work? When we scatter the seed, God gives growth. Think of Christ's peace in your heart and join us in scattering that seed throughout the world.

A Prayer: Lord Jesus, I thank you for the seed that has been sown in my heart. I praise you and ask you to help me bring that seed to many more people. Amen.
