Background Information

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has made a commitment to encourage all members of our congregations, from children to adults, to dig deeper into our book of faith, the Bible. The Book of Faith Initiative recommends a new model for our church--a grass-roots approach embracing a common vision in which we all are invited to open scripture and join the conversation. Each community is encouraged to decide how the Book of Faith Initiative will become a vital part of its own ministry.

At the 2008 Northwest Washington Synod Assembly voting members approved the Book of Faith Initiative amending the title's initiative to Bible Book of Faith. Click here for the resolution.

Key Purposes Of The Initiative

  • Encourage opening the Bible and discover anew the many ways to understand God's message.
  • Make commitments to join in Bible-centered conversations.
  • Increase Bible literacy and fluency.
  • Deepen our understanding of Lutheran insights
  • Renew and enliven the church.

Resources

To assist in accomplishing these goals, the first emphasis is on communication--sharing ideas with each other across the church. A communication network has been established through the Book of Faith website (http://www.bookoffaith.ning.org Going off site). The Northwest Washington Synod has a discussion group. Visit the site and join in the conversation. http://bookoffaith.ning.com/group/northwestwashingtonsynod Going off site

Resources are available for enhancing reading, studying and sharing scripture insights. Visit http://www.bookoffaith.org Going off site for these resources.

Events

A series of Bible Study events have recently been held in four different locations in the synod. Other Bible study events will again be held in 2010. We look forward to seeing you at these events as we continue digging deeper into our book of faith, the Bible.
