What is Sumud?
Sumud (صمود) is an Arabic term translating to "steadfastness" or "perseverance." In the Palestinian context, it embodies a philosophy of non-violent, everyday resistance and quiet resilience—a determination to maintain presence, culture, and dignity on the land despite impossible conditions and colonial oppression.
Who We Are
Our Northwest Washington Synod Sumud group is a growing and dynamic circle who care deeply about the people of Palestine and Israel. We long - and pray - for justice and freedom for the Palestinian people, particularly the Palestinian Christians who make up the membership of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land. Through education and advocacy, we seek to tell the stories of the “living stones” who walk among the ancient stones of the land we call “holy.”

Our Current Recommendation
Stolen Stories is a documentary film currently made up of four video segments, each of them approximately ten minutes long. Together, these segments tell the story of the Palestinian people from the unique perspective of Palestinian Christians. The series (which will eventually include a fifth segment and a discussion guide for each of the five video segments) begins by recounting the events of 1948, known by Palestinians as the Nakba, which translates to "catastrophe" or “disaster." In subsequent episodes, the film marks the mass displacement, dispossession, and ongoing loss of their homeland during the establishment of the State of Israel. Each of the videos feature voices and narratives of the people of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land while poignantly and pointedly addressing the ongoing issue of expansion. - Erik Wilson Weiberg, NW Washington Synod Sumud Ambassador
